Building Change is open to nonprofits, faith communities, corporate volunteer teams, civic groups, and community organizations. Individual volunteers are welcome when they sign up as part of an organized group. If you are unsure whether your group qualifies, reach out and we will help figure it out.

No prior construction or skilled trades experience is required. Projects are structured so that volunteers of all backgrounds can contribute. Site leads will walk your group through the work at the start of the day. A willingness to roll up your sleeves is all you need.

Projects range from exterior home repairs and painting to yard cleanup, debris removal, and community space beautification. The specific scope depends on partner organization needs and the size of the volunteer group. Every project results in a visible, physical improvement to a Birmingham neighborhood.

We recommend registering at least three to four weeks before your preferred project date. This gives us time to identify the right site, coordinate with partner organizations, and stage the appropriate tools and equipment. Last-minute requests may be accommodated depending on availability.

Wear clothes you do not mind getting dirty and closed-toe shoes. Bring water, sunscreen, and any personal protective items you prefer. All tools and project materials are provided by Magic City ToolBank. We will share a full preparation checklist when your registration is confirmed.

Project sites are assigned based on current partner needs, project readiness, and group size. If your organization has a specific community in mind or an existing relationship with a project site, let us know when you register. We will do our best to accommodate meaningful connections where possible.
